Art Lab 2

Born in 1978, Mohamed Bourouissa lives and works in Paris. He is known for his direct, imposing color photographs of young people, immigrants, and everyday life in the Paris suburbs. Bourouissa is fascinated by systems, how society is structured, and how social processes are activated. Unlike traditional socially critical photographers, he always works within and in collaboration with communities.

Dieter Leyssen holds a MSc in Architecture (KU Leuven) and is candidate MSc in City Making and Social Sciences (London School of Economics and Political Science). In practice and writing, he developed a specific interest in collaborative processes of city making. In 2012, he conducted a research by design together with Eva De Fré in which they addressed how planners, architects and policy makers could critically approach the process of gentrification in distressed urban areas. By pronouncing micro-economies and community networks between local residents and engaged newcomers as a main asset, the work focused on stimulating the positive potential of gentrification while preventing the negative consequences of the process, such as the dislocation of the poorest populations. In 2013 he became part of Brussels-based international practice 51N4E, where he is involved in various architectural and urban design projects. Since 2018 he has taught at the MSc in Architecture, Urban Project programme of the KU Leuven.
 

TELEINTERNETCAFE Architektur and Urabnismus, is based in Berlin and Hamburg and is led by 4 partners: Marius Gantert, Andreas Krauth, Urs Kumberger and Verena Schmidt.

Teleinternetcafe uses a multiperspective and cooperative approach. The office has developed a strong expertise concerning site-specific concepts and process-oriented strategies at the intersection between architecture and urbanism.

Urs Krumberger is founding member of the Berlin based pratice Teleinternetcafe Architektur und Urbanismus. He studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and the Berlin University of the Arts. After his studies he worked for practices such as Interboro in New York,

SMAQ and Raumlabor in Berlin. He gained experience in research and teaching at the Leibniz University Hannover and the Technical University of Brunswick and he recently was interim professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Verena Schmidt is founding member of the Berlin based pratice Teleinternetcafe Architektur und Urbanismus. She studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and at the City College of New York. After her studies she gained professional experience in the field of architecture (Heide & von Beckerath), architectural communication and editing (Detail and Arch+). She worked as an assistant professor at the Technical University of Brunswick and recently supported Teleinternetcafe´s interim professorship at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Antonia Alampi is a curator, researcher and writer born to southern Italy and currently based in Berlin, where she is Artistic co-Director of SAVVY Contemporary. Since 2017 and until mid-2019 she is also curator of Extra City Kunsthal in Antwerp, with a three-years program focused on the manufacturing of the notion of European Citizenship. She recently founded a research platform - Toxic Commons - that brings together cultural practitioners and academic researchers in the sciences to address environmental injustice by unravelling the complex nature of toxicity. In 2016 she initiated the research project Future Climates, starting off in Athens in March 2017, by focusing on how economic fluxes shape and determine the work of small-scale initiatives in contexts with weak public infrastructures for arts and culture.

From 2012 to 2015 she was curator of Beirut, an art initiative that existed in Cairo in that time-frame, reflecting on the paramount moment of transition the country was experiencing. There, she also conceived and directed the educational project The Imaginary School Program (2014/2015) looking into forms of organizing and institution building in the city. Between 2009 and 2011 she was the co-founding director of the art initiative Opera Rebis and prior to this she has worked for the Studio Stefania Miscetti (Rome), Manifesta7 (South Tyrol) and the Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea of Trento.

She writes irregularly for Mousse, Flash Art International and Art-Agenda, and has published books on Jérôme Bel, Adelita Husni-Bey, Ibrahim Mahama, Doris Maninger, Julius Eastman (upcoming) amongst others. She holds an MA in Art History from La Sapienza University in Rome, and has participated in the de Appel curatorial program in Amsterdam.
